The MMI, is a first person psychological horror game that takes place on a dark, cold mining outpost deep in space. The player, alone on the mining outpost, wakes up to a note that details all of their daily duties. The player has to exit the living quarters and then go into the main purpose room to activate the drilling, while the player is on the routine, the player notices that things are changing. The game’s goal is to always give the player an isolated feeling. Hallways are very narrow. The room’s are too large for one person, making the player feel that there should be more inhabitants on the mining station. Movement through areas that are close, to very open areas, keeps the tension that the player feels. The player stumbles upon images of themselves throughout the game. This image is warning the player to not go into the freezer.
The MMI not only contains visual progression for the player, but also a detailed narration that adds to the immersion of the player. From the radio broadcast to the protagonists, the game interjects narrative sound that drives the player further into the horror. As the player moves through each routine, the player starts to notice that things are changing, walls are getting dirtier, this visualization evokes the player to wonder why. The player must find the lost keycard. Finding the lost keycard allows for access to the freezer. Throughout the search for the keycard, the player is presented with certain tasks that allows the player to progress through the game. These tasks lead the player to the discovery of the lost keycard. Once the player has the final keycard, the player is able to make it to the freezer room, use the keycard, and enter the room. Once the player enters the freezer room, the player realizes that the room is certain death and it fades to day? Gameplay begins again. Through the use of repeating levels, the player starts to wonder if they really know what is real and what is an illusion.
