As an ambitious sequel to a well received game, Frostpunk 2 required a bold and unique soundtrack that would equally honor the original's legacy and forge its new path.
The new sound was a consequence of a shift of scale from string quartet and chamber orchestra to a grand, more open orchestral sound, using more modern harmonic material and post production techniques (like heavy pitch shifting). It utilizes real world object and human sound design elements (for instance boot stomping, steam engine) as percussion, as well as custom recorded makeshift instruments (for example ghost cello) to reflect the dark grittiness and the brutalism of the game.
New and legacy leitmotifs, that are present in both melodic material as well as signature sounds are a respectful tribute to the original, evoking a feeling of familiarity, even nostalgia but juxtaposed with an ominous sense of unstoppable progress, imminent danger, and finally a reward.
Nature is no longer the biggest. But human nature is.
Music composed, orchestrated and mixed by Piotr Musial. Recorded by Sofia Session Orchestra, conducted by George Strezov.
Soundtrack mastered by Matthias Adloff and published by Milan Records/Sony Music Entertainment.
